One of the questions I’m asked most is how to achieve the classic “flawless” makeup look. Of course, the makeup itself is a huge factor but, truthfully, the secret is all in how you prep your skin.

If your skin is healthy and hydrated, your makeup will sit better and last longer.

    Sound good? Read on….

    The Power of Routine

I would always suggest establishing a routine of cleansing, toning and moisturising twice daily. If you’re not used to this, it might seem a bit of a faff but your skin will thank you for it in years to come!

There are a huge range of great cleansing creams, gels and foams on the market and this in itself can be overwhelming. Any good beauty brand you might find in a large department store would be happy to have a short chat with you to discuss your skin requirements. You might even come away with a few samples to try – bonus! Take a bit of time to find what fits best for you and go from there.

The Power of (the right) Products

As you probably would’ve guessed, I’m a big fan of quality skincare and particularly love products that make my skin appear brighter and healthier. My personal favourites include Elemis and Liz Earle cleansers, both of which have been a staple in my own skincare routine for years! Other brands that have yielded impressive results for me include QMS Medicosmetics and Elequra. I’m currently trying out the Smoothing Cleanser from Tropic and am loving it – not only does it feel luxurious but it effortlessly melts away makeup and any lurking impurities!

A Word of Warning on Wipes: Makeup removal wipes are fine for the odd occasion but are not a suitable replacement for a quality cleanser. I do have them in my kit but only for wiping away product that falls off whilst doing eye makeup; I wouldn’t ever recommend them as part of a daily routine.

When it comes to my clients, I love to refresh their skin and remove makeup and dirt with micellar water, like this one. Micellar water is a perfect companion when you are on the go and perhaps do not have access to your regular cleanser.

If your cleanser does not remove eye makeup, I would recommend investing in eye makeup remover as well. I like L’Oréal Paris Absolute Eye and Lip Make-Up Remover because it is specially formulated for waterproof and long-lasting makeup and removes it swiftly and tenderly, leaving skin feeling fresh, cleansed and soft.

Pro Tip! Turn your regular eye makeup remover into a spa-like eye mask by soaking two cotton pads and gently press on your closed eyelids. Remove it with a sweeping motion (never rub – the eye area is too delicate for this!)

And so, on to toning! It’s a step in the routine that can cause a bit of controversy in the beauty world – do you really need it? For example, if you rinse and splash your face with cold water it can act like a toner in itself but, honestly, this step is the one that gives me the most joy so it’s very much a part of my routine! My favourite tonic water is from Liz Earle – I have been using it for about 15 years now and still cannot get enough of it. It leaves my skin beautifully soft and the smell is absolutely divine!

Pro Tip! Splashing your face with ice-cold water is the perfect exercise for your skin as it tightens and helps to reduce the appearance of lines.

The final step is your moisturiser. Once you’ve selected the right type for your skin (don’t forget those samples!), tap lightly all over your face and neck. In the morning, add sun protection of at least 20 SPF on top. Or if (like me) you don’t like using an additional cream each day, try to use tinted moisturisers that already include SPF. Eye cream is just as important, and you should only use cream or gel that has been specifically designed to be used on the delicate eye area. Use your ring finger to apply lightly and just tap a small amount of the product on your skin.

The Power of Time for you

birute thomas professional makeup services hampshire

Yes, all these products perform a function for your skin but there is also something to be said for having a few minutes at the beginning and end of each day that are just for you. I’ve already written about the scent of my toner and the joy it brings me – it may seem frivolous but, for a lot of us, there aren’t many parts of the day that are just for us. These pockets of time away from the busyness of life shouldn’t be underestimated. So close the bathroom door, gather your favourite products together and ENJOY!

Final Pro Tip! One of the most important things to remember is to stay hydrated. You need to drink at least 2 litres of water every single day and your skin will look amazing.

If you follow these simple steps, when it comes to your wedding day and all eyes are on you, you can enjoy your special day feeling confident that you’ll be glowing – both inside and out!

  • A Date at the Castello Banfi: 27.04.19, Tuscany, Italy

On the 27th of April 2019, surrounded by stunning Italian scenery, the gorgeous Catriona and her husband got married at Castello Banfi. With the sun scorching, it was important that her makeup lasted all day – and so, we created a flawless base to remember.

    Catriona’s experience

    How you found me:

I found Birute through a google search and she happened to have done the wedding makeup for a girl I knew from university. So I contacted my friend and asked her opinion and she had nothing but wonderful things to say about Birute so I went ahead and contacted her!

What were your expectations of a bridal MUA before we met?

I had no idea what to expect, but hoped that the MUA I hired would be friendly and know how to make some good suggestions, as well as transform any of the looks I had as inspiration into something that would work for me. I had a Pinterest board and luckily Birute does make up very similar to my tastes, which is a fairly natural look.

What was your experience at our first meeting – the trial?

It was a very straightforward experience in the end and I would absolutely recommend her! Birute was such a sweetheart and made me feel so comfortable, even offering me a glass of bubbly! She is very friendly and uses great products, which was really important to me as I have sensitive skin.

On the 27th of April 2019, surrounded by stunning Italian scenery, the gorgeous Catriona and her husband got married at Castello Banfi.

What look did you go for and who had their makeup done?

I went for a fairly natural look with a nice glow for my skin and eye shadow and a hint of wing eyeliner that was nice and subtle. The choice of lip colour was my favourite, and Birute was so great at adapting the colour change after the trial. My mother, the mother of the groom, sister of the groom, and my maid of honour all had their make up done by Birute. She worked for hours and came all the way to Italy for the wedding, which was really appreciated. They all looked amazing!

How did you feel once your look was complete?

I was so apprehensive about how I would feel, as I generally don’t wear a lot of makeup or have my hair fancy, or even wear dresses! So being all dressed up for the big day was something I was worried about. But I was so happy with the final look and looking back at the photos I can see why – just amazing!

Did you enjoy the process? What tips would you give to brides-to be? Would you recommend me to others and why?

100%. It was so easy and comfortable. I will consider booking her for future events because it was exactly what I wanted and lasted all night!

On the 27th of April 2019, surrounded by stunning Italian scenery, the gorgeous Catriona and her husband got married at Castello Banfi.

    Creating a flawless makeup base

How did the trial/consultation go for you?

In terms of the make up, Catriona didn’t want anything over the top, just a simple nude shadow with some nice lashes and top liner. We wanted to create a beautiful flawless base and cat eye wing with the help of individual fake lashes. As the wedding was in Italy we had to make sure that the makeup stays in the hot weather conditions.

Skin prep was key so I advised Catriona to stay hydrated, cleanse and moisturise properly leading towards her big day. On the day, I refreshed her skin as it’s super important to lay perfect foundations for makeup to follow. I chose Avene moisturiser as it’s suitable for sensitive skin and very moisturising. It’s important to put makeup in stages to let the layers set.

For the evening, Catriona changed her lipstick into a bright red one.

  • A Chichester Wedding: 04/05/2019

On 4th May 2019, Rachel became another one of my blissful bride’s with her glowing natural look.

Rachel was looking for a more natural look that still had that special ‘done up’ feel to enhance her already beautiful features with the help of Charlotte Tilbury products.

    Rachel’s experience

    How you found me:

I found Birute via Google search for make-up artists who covered the Chichester area.

What were your expectations of a bridal MUA before we met?

I did most of my initial research on Instagram and wedding blogs like Rock My Wedding and Love My Dress. I was looking for a more natural look that still had that special ‘done up’ feel to it so I felt like the best version of myself. I also love Charlotte Tilbury products which I know Birute uses.

What was your experience at our first meeting – the trial?

I was so happy with my trial. I took along some images of make-up looks and Birute adapted those for my colouring and skin tone. I had a good idea of the lip colour I wanted and Birute found a perfect match for it.

Rachel was looking for a natural look that still had that special 'done up' feel to enhance her features with the help of Charlotte Tilbury products.

What look did you go for and who had their makeup done?

I went for a fairly natural look with bronze tones for my eyes and a nude/pink lip colour. Birute did the make-up for me, my bridesmaids and my step-mum.

How did you feel once your look was complete?

I felt so happy and confident once I had my make-up done! It really complimented the overall look I was going for with my dress and hair and I couldn’t wait for my husband to see me walking down the aisle.

Did you enjoy the process? What tips would you give to brides-to be? Would you recommend me to others and why?

I felt at ease knowing Birute was doing my make-up and she delivered the exact look I loved when I had my trial. She even took photos of me on her SLR camera so I could see exactly how the make-up would look in our professional photos which really helped me imagine how I would look on the day. I would 100% not hesitate to recommend Birute to all brides!

Recreating the best of Charlotte Tilbury

How did the trial/consultation go for you?

Rachel came to me with the look that she liked and I could see that it would be the perfect style for her. She likes looks that are Charlotte Tilbury esque so we recreated a very similar look in line with Rachel’s makeup preferences.

  • Say hello to the Makeup Artist of the Year!

Winning an award and being recognised for doing what you love as a living is no longer a dream for me as an award-winning MUA.

Last year, I applied for The Wedding Industry Awards (TWIA) due to one of my kind photographer friends, Kristida Photography nominating! With much encouragement and support, I decided I was finally ready to apply for something as big as TWIA.

Last year, I applied for The Wedding Industry Awards (TWIA) due to one of my kind photographer friends, Kristida Photography nominating! Click to read more on my blog.

    A time-worthy process

The application process for TWIA was extensive and took a lot of time to complete. My advice here is to take your time and make sure you answer the questions properly. Once the application was complete a link to vote for me was sent. Immediately I emailed all of my previous brides from that year, and I gratefully had the majority of them took the time to vote for me.

Waiting for the email to find out whether I had become a regional finalist was the most nerve-wracking experience.  The announcement was supposed to be near the end of October, but due to technical issues this was delayed. I was not aware of this and so when no congratulations email came through I presumed I didn’t make it through, which made me very sad.

Last year, I applied for The Wedding Industry Awards (TWIA) due to one of my kind photographer friends, Kristida Photography nominating! Click to read more on my blog.

    Not all was lost

Fast forward 48 hours and  the most incredible surprise occurred! I was thrilled to receive an email from TWIA explaining what had happened and, more important that I had made it!

A hobby to an award-winning business

In November, I made my way to Farnham Castle, the most beautiful venue and host to TWIA. It was a very grand affair filled with amazing local wedding suppliers.

After an evening of glitz and glamour, the awards started. I can not begin to put into words how I felt when it was announced I had won but the night left me feeling inspired and uplifted.

    The big night

Fast forward a couple of months to January, I was with my husband at Cafe De Paris in London and very nervous. I met with other wedding suppliers in mine and different categories. All the regional winners where then up against each other for the hotly contested UK’s best. I was up against seven other national finalists – all of which were amazing at what they do. Halfway through the ceremony, Damian (The organiser) announced the makeup artist category. All eight of our names appeared on the screen, and I was so proud to see my name. Then the nerve kicked in. It was when Damian started reading the winners announcement which included an anonymous review. I turned and said to my husband Mark, “This is one of my brides!”.

Before I could process the moment, he announced that the National Winner is: Birute Thomas Makeup Artist! I was absolutely ecstatic. I couldn’t believe I was officially the  ‘Makeup Artist of the Year’ The recognition is incredible. We celebrated all night, and I just couldn’t stop smiling.

Last year, I applied for The Wedding Industry Awards (TWIA) due to one of my kind photographer friends, Kristida Photography nominating! Click to read more on my blog.

    What happened next?…

After the awards, we get to read the votes from our brides, and that was one of the most amazing feelings to read such kind words! It’s wonderful to know that my brides appreciate my work and the judging panel chose me as their 2019 winner.

Six months on, I have never been busier, and I feel like I have to work so much harder. I still feel very proud when people recognise me from the wedding industry – I have achieved so much in such a short time period. These awards are the most prestigious, and I am certainly entering again this year, it opened a couple of weeks ago, and I am going for it! Stay tuned. You can watch my winners interview here.

  • An Armsworth Wedding: 18/05/2019

On the 18th of May, Temora became a stunning bride with an English Rose look.

Like many brides, Temora had a concern about the amount of makeup she would have on and an uncertainty of what to expect. Part of what I do is listen to what they want. And for Temora, it was a produce a natural look highlighting her already glowing features.

    Temora’s experience

What was your experience at our first meeting – the trial?

Our first meeting was brilliant. As soon as you opened the door I knew immediately I would be in safe hands. Birute was smiley and willing to listen to my suggestions. I showed the makeup which I used on a day to day basis, and we worked around creating a fresh and natural look. It was an enjoyable experience and surprisingly, very relaxing. I felt confident leaving knowing there was one less wedding preparation I needed to worry about.

What look did you go for and who had their makeup done?

I went for a natural English Rose look, which was fresh and light. I decided because my trial went so well that my mother and my maids of honour should also have their make up done on the day.

How did you feel once your look was complete?

Once the make up trial was complete, I felt that the products used were light and complimented my skin tone. I have sensitive skin and the products used didn’t make my eyes water, which was a real bonus. When I got home to show my family, they all complimented me on how natural and ‘very me’ the look was.

Did you enjoy the process? What tips would you give to brides-to-be? Would you recommend me to others and why?

I thoroughly enjoyed the process. I have already recommended Birute to a friend of mine who is getting married in June. Birute was so calm and collected on the day of the wedding and it was a real pleasure having her as part of our day. My make up lasted all day and all night, and I really couldn’t recommend her more highly.

Thank you for being so fantastic. I am lost for words.

Temora was such a pleasure to work with.

I always listen to my brides and try to deliver what they want from me. Temora wanted very natural bridal makeup, so we created a glowing look to enhance her features. Temora’s style is very classic, and she wore a heavy duchess satin in an ivory colour dress. She was also wearing a family tiara, earrings and a stunning necklace. This meant the makeup needed to be simple and classic to not compete with the jewellery.

I advised that for a special day like a wedding we should go with a tiny bit more makeup that usual. This is so important for photos. Temora liked Princess Eugene’s wedding makeup, so we tried to recreate that look, in line with what was suitable for her. As Temora wasn’t used to wearing a lot of makeup on an everyday basis, so we went with a simple thin layer of foundation, blusher, bronzer, a hint of mascara, light lipstick and a swipe of brow gel through her eyebrows (see what we used below).

I only applied thin layers of foundation to leave the skin looking fresh, followed with a little bit of bronzer and blusher to create that beautiful English Rose romantic look. Temora also likes filed in brows, so we made sure that the brows looked immaculate. I also put some eyeliner on her top lash line as this helps to create a beautiful shape.

There is not a skin tone, skin type or texture that I have not worked with.

Welcome to my bridal makeup blog. Here you will find beautiful imagery and real life makeup looks for real life brides - the best of Birute Thomas MUA.

So, whether you are a lover of the iconic classical bridal look, an edgy modern bride, a boho natural bride, a glam bride, the limits do not exist. Your wedding trial is going to be very exciting, and I truly look forward to meeting you and working with you.

I am privileged to work alongside some of the very best bridal hairstylists, so feel free to ask for my recommendations.

    My humble beginnings

As a little girl, I was always interested in skincare and makeup. Ironically, however, I ended up in the finance sector instead. I enjoyed my job, but my creative passions became too loud to ignore.  After having my son Archie (who is now six), I had the perfect opportunity to embark on a new adventure.  Finally, the rebellious teenager who had allowed the finance world to tame her, realised her passion.

    Kristina and the inspiration

Everything changed the day I read an article in a bridal magazine about the award-winning makeup artist Kristina Gasperas. There was something so inspiring seeing a woman from the same country as I, become such an iconic leader in the luxury bridal beauty market. I knew straight away I had to learn from her and train to be the best MUA I could be.

I connected with Kristina on a personal level because I am Lithuanian as well. So, we have a similar work ethic alongside our passionate nature, our history and heritage. So, the training began, hours and hours of inspirational tutoring and I cannot put into words how happy I was.

Welcome to my bridal makeup blog. Here you will find beautiful imagery and real life makeup looks for real life brides - the best of Birute Thomas MUA.

    Practice makes perfect

I cannot begin to tell you the hours I devoted to perfecting my skills. The course with Kristina encouraged this extraordinary adventure.

I remember the endless practise sessions with models and friends vividly. All the while, Archie was in his car seat, my beautiful motivation to succeed.

As time has gone on, and I have honed my skills, I now only undertake two luxury masterclasses a year with not only my iconic teacher but other MUA’s that I admire. These are as much about the tutoring as they are about the confidence boost I get from learning from them.

    2019 is my year

This year I became a Winner of The Wedding Industry Awards. This is one of the most prestigious award program in the wedding industry! What I love about these awards is the winners are chosen by real clients and a panel of esteemed and experienced judges, all who specialise in the area they are judging.

One of the most beautiful parts of this process is reading the incredible testimonials. I appreciate clients taking time to write such complimentary and kind reviews. I had to read them in batches as they reduced me to joyful tears.  The whole process provided me with reassurance and confirmation that I am most certainly in the right industry and doing precisely what I was meant to do.

Welcome to my bridal makeup blog. Here you will find beautiful imagery and real life makeup looks for real life brides - the best of Birute Thomas MUA.

Over the last year, I realise that I love to work with clients to create their personal vision. I have discovered that ensuring a bride radiates confidence is the key. Working with my brides must include an inspiration consultation and consideration of every bride’s individual taste. Every day I remind myself to take care of my business and work in my community and amongst suppliers. I adore to raise awareness of the extraordinary industry based around Hampshire.

2019 is my year and my hard work has paid off. I now have two incredible women in my team, I am a national winner and I really love what I do!
